Giorgio Armani is proud to renew his challenge "Acqua for life" for 2012. A project aimed at stimulating a greater awareness of public opinion on enviromental issues and development, with a particular reference to the shortage and safety of the water. He is supporting the eco-friendly Green Cross International (GCI) who promote access to drinkable water in poor countries for children and their communities.

Armani has supported the project offering 100 litres of water for the purchase of either one of his fragrances, both associated with water. The customer could also spread the word on the internet, via the social networks and hence further increasing the litres of water collected. This allowed Armani to exceed his initial objective of 40 million litres, reaching an end result of 43,3 million litres of drinkable water. “Thanks to the system of collecting water offered to the schools by Giorgio Armani, the children haven’t had to walk for long distances to get water. Now they can spend more of their time in the classroom than they ever did before” says Reverend Nartey Benjamin, director of the Adawso Presbyterian School, which boasts more than a thousand students. “They even manage to get to school earlier, and this has greatly helped the teaching and their understanding.”

Water covers 75% of the planet, but only 3% is fresh water and less than 1% (0,7%) is actually enough to meet everyone’s needs.
Children are always the first victims to suffer from lack of water and pollution, since they are the most vulnerable. Every day 4000 children in the world die due to illnesses linked to water, mainly diarrhoea, that could be so easily prevented. Nearly 900 million people do not have access to drinkable water.
The GCI projects include sustainable and experimental solutions, in order to build basic water collecting systems on school roofs, and the diversion of rain water into elevated tanks with a capacity of 20.000 litres, that both students and members of the community can monitor, use and follow up any simple maintenance.
The challenge is inspired, and tied into the exclusive fragrance Acqua di Giò (for men) and Acqua di Gioia (for women), that are both associated with water and are closely linked to the preception of the generosity of nature, freshness and enviromental harmony. These values are compatible with Green Cross’s principles initiatives , the non-government organisation founded in 1993 by Mikhail Gorbaciov, in response to the joint challenges of safety, poverty and enviromental deterioration, and to ensure a safe future for everyone.

ACQUA DI GIOIA
In 2012, the challenge “Acqua for Life”, a campaign for solidarity on a global scale and which has a huge impact on the internet, committed itself to continue to increase the support of Green Cross International’s efforts (www.gcint.org), to improve access to drinkable water via its project in Ghana and via a project in Bolivia. The GCI project “Smart Water for Green Schools” provides water to communities where access to drinkable water is for only a few.
LA T-SHIRT DI ACQUA FOR LIFE
THE ACQUA FOR LIFE T-SHIRT
Last June Giorgio Armani received an envelope from Ghana. Inside were a dozen pictures drawn by children from the communities that had been helped thanks to Acqua for Life. Their way of saying thank you, in a more colourful way and even more personal than what we are often used too. The pictures showed everyday life, women collecting water from the wells just built, or even scenes from school life.
To pay homage to these communities, Giorgio Armani has decided to print these drawings on his t-shirts, mixing them in with his designs. These t-shirts will be sold for €60 in selected Emporio Armani stores, starting from March 2012. 30% of the retail price of these t-shirts will go to Green Cross International in favour of the project “Smart Water for Green Schools”.
